Mop Swap
I loathe mopping, but it must be done. What I dislike even more is a mop that does not do the job or does not live up to the often hard-to-believe-in-the-first-place promises of the mother company. As a consumer and avid clean freak, I want a mop that does what I want it to do: clean the goo! In stead, most of them just push the dirt around while leaving your floor wet. Once it dries, your bound to find dirt and speckles and spots you will have to waste more time and effort on. I’ve tried ‘em all: sponge mops, string mops and even steam mops. I even went all ‘Cinderella” at one point- complete with bucket, soap, water, and a sponge- thinking this had to be better than any old mop, despite the fact that it was a real pain in the… well, knees! There had to be a better way! I am one of those people who has been oh-so blessed with little carpeting and a whole lot of tile and hardwoods. I desperately needed something that I could confidently believe would get these floors clean and save me a lot of pain and trouble.
That’s when I discovered the awesome alternative of microfiber mops! Good microfiber mops are made using ultra lightweight aluminum and telescopic type handles (don’t be fooled by plastic imitations. They do not work as well and are prone to breakage) These mops are designed to use disposable or washable microfiber pads that attach easily with Velcro strips on the bottom of the mop. You can use either dry or wet pads. They’re great for dusting walls as well as cleaning floors. The pad fibers are made of polyester and nylon polyamide and are split to create microscopic claws that grab and hold dust and dirt. Microfiber is extremely absorbent and is said to hold six times its weight in liquid. The mop head is designed to cover large areas quickly. Microfiber mops weigh than one pound, making them easy to use and very portable. They are very effective and can easily clean using only water or you’re favorite antibacterial cleaner.
I love my microfiber mop. I will never go back to my old mop, and you will certainly never see me playing “Cinderella” on my floors again. I’ve finally found the golden mop! Easy to use, affordable and lives up to the promises made!
History of the mop
Yo, MopGuy comin back atcha discussing the mop. Exactly where did this brilliant cleaning necessity come from?? What did early mops look like? What were they made of?
Well, according to the internets and other American sources, Thomas W. Stewart is credited with the invention of the mop in 1893. Now, technically, he was the first to patent a mop. Does this mean he invented it? MopGuy is guessing no. But this Thomas W. Stewart character is interesting because he was a black man from Kalamazoo Michigan. I hear it wasn’t that easy being a black man in America around the turn of the century, so I am glad Mr. Stewart gets the credit. Hopefully he made some cash from his patent! Stewart’s mop patent was actually a lever system that allowed you to remove the mop part from the pole, from what I understand. The actual mop head wasn’t in the picture. I would assume the pole would have been made of wood, possibly pine or oak or some other tree commonly found in the north, with a metal lever system. I have two guesses as to what the actual mop head part would have been made of, one is cotton, probably the most obvious choice, and the second is hemp. Hemp would have still been legal to grow in the US back then and was used for many, many things other than altering one’s consciousness. Nowadays, mop heads are made of cotton, rayon, some fancy blends of who knows what chemically made fibers, and microfiber mops. Stewart also invented a signaling device used with roads, cars, and trains. Cool dude for sure.
It just stands to reason that mops were around before this time, and in fact, some think the mop dates back to the time of the ancient Romans. I bet it was Caesar! He must have invented the mop right after he invented the salad.
There was another huge leap in mop technology in the 1950′s. Peter and Thomas Vosbikian patented a mop that used a sponge instead of a Medusa head of fibers. This sponge was semi detachable, allowing you to squeeze the sponge together and wring out the dirty water.
Now after that, not a whole of excitement filled the world of mopping until a miracle of technology was adapted to cleaning products. Yes, I am talking about microfiber! About 100 years after the first mop patent, come the newest and most current mop craze, the microfiber mop. These fantastic devices are made of teeny tiny fibers of polyester and nylon. They don’t leave behind lint and dust, and the heads are easily replaceable.
What’s next in the mop world?? Only time will tell. I’m thinking Nuclear Powered Automatic Mighty Mops of Mayhem.

What is Microfiber?
Technically defined, a microfiber is a fiber with less than 1 denier per filament. Of course, everyone knows that!
What the hell is a denier?? A denier is a measure of linear density. Ok, what is linear density?? Linear density according to a physics style definition via answer.com, it is the quantity of anything distributed along a line per unit length of line.
In MopGuy (not the smartest guy around) terms, this means how much the little fiber weighs. How do you weigh a tiny little fiber? MopGuy doesn’t know and MopGuy doesn’t care! We’ll leave that for the genius scientists and maybe the guy at the state fair who guesses everyone’s weight. But if you want to get really technical, 9000 meters of a 1 denier fiber would weigh one gram. That’s pretty darn light, and a microfiber weighs less than that.
Now I suppose a microfiber could be made of anything light weight enough and agile enough to be manipulated on such a small level. But when you hear the term microfiber, it is often in reference to microfibers of polyester. Yes, just like those pants that have been in your closet since 1977! The other common microfiber material is polymide, or nylon. Call your girlfriends pantyhose, microfibers, and see what she says. I’m sure she’ll just look at you strangely like how women usually look at me when I tell them my name is MopGuy. But back to microfibers. Microfibers such as those commonly used in cleaning products can be a combination of polyester and polymide.
People first started making ultra-fine fibers back in the 1950′s, though they really didn’t know what to do with them. In the 70′s, along came Ultrasuede, or Alcantara. The 1990′s saw the introduction of microfibers to clothing over in Europe which has filtered to the rest of the world. And even more recently, microfibers have caused an uproar in the cleaning product community!
An interesting microfiber side note, the NBA tried out microfiber basketballs in the 2006-2007 season. The idea was that microfibers absorb moisture better which would help control the accumulation of sweat from the players hands on the ball, making it less slippery. Players complained that the ball bounced differently and was abrasive to their hands, so they returned to using good old fashioned leather basketballs.
Jumping back to microfibers used in clothing (because MopGuy has ADD), just on a personal note, I love this stuff! As by design, it wicks away moisture, whatever the hell that means. All I know is that microfiber shirts feel good. I wear them while running and other heart beat raising, sweat creating, physical exercise and I have noticed that the shirts don’t get dripping wet like when I wear a normal, cotton or cotton blend shirt. I am guessing I don’t sweat less when I wear these shirts, the shirts just somehow seem to make the sweat go somewhere magical. Whatever!
Now one of the cool things about microfibers that people really get off on is that they don’t leave lint or dust behind. This is great for hospitals and places that must be very very clean. They can use microfiber cloths, rags, mops and dust mops to cut down on the dust flying around when they have bodies opened up in the operating room. This is one reason microfiber products have earned a “green”, “eco-friendly” reputation. These same products are also great for car freaks who just spend thousands on a paint job for their stupid looking car that makes them feel good about themselves.
Another cool thing, in my eyes, is that microfiber cloths and rags pick up oils and fats better than typical rags. This is great for in the kitchen, or when your changing the oil in that stupid looking car! But be careful, microfiber products are often flammable, and since they are polyester and nylon (petrochemicals), they emit toxic chemicals when on fire. But hey, so does that cigarette you’re puffing on.
Welp, that’s about all the information I have gathered on microfibers, time to go watch some Family Guy!
